WASHINGTON — U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) joined Sean Hannity on Fox News.

On Senate Republicans’ agenda:

“Well, we’ve got a lot to do, and the president’s laid out an agenda. We’re all working together on it. I just came out of a meeting with Speaker Johnson and his team, and as we work on the … so-called ‘big, beautiful bill,’ it’s going to deliver in a lot of ways for the American people.

“You talked about it: tax relief, obviously, spending cuts, a generational investment in border security, making sure that our military is ready to face all the threats around the world, and obviously American energy dominance. Those are the things the president campaigned on. That’s what the American people voted for, and we’re going to work very hard to be good partners with him in achieving it.”

On budget reconciliation:

“So, we have much stricter rules around how reconciliation can be used in the Senate. So as we work with the House, we’re trying to anticipate the pitfalls that we might have. If you get to the Senate and you get in violation of what’s called the Byrd Rule, you can be out of compliance on the floor. If you’re out of compliance, you lose privilege, and if you lose privilege, you can no longer do it at 51 votes in the Senate; it goes back to the normal 60-vote threshold.

“So it’s a huge, consequential thing that we get this right, and that’s why we are working closely with his team, with the White House. And in the end, Sean, it’s the president who will deliver the votes. These are the things that he wants to get done and Speaker Johnson and I will both have challenges in trying to get 218 in the House and … 51, in the Senate, but I think that with the president’s help, we can get there. And … it’s not going to be easy and, you know, he said he thought he’d get it done by the end of May.

“I’ve said that I think we could have it all the way through the process and on the president’s desk hopefully by the Fourth of July. And that would be pretty record speed around here, for the way things normally work. But there’s a lot of moving parts to this, and we want to make sure that we deliver, and we’re working closely to do that.”

On Republicans’ priorities in budget reconciliation:

“I mean, it is a generational investment in the border. And the president’s been incredibly successful, but he’s going to need some things, some resources to continue that success there. And when it comes to national security, I mean, we’re way behind in where we should be on nuclear weapons. He wants a golden dome. We’re way behind in terms of shipbuilding in our Navy. And if you look at the threats around the world, it’s a very dangerous world today. So he’s right to focus on and emphasize that. And in the tax space, it is, it’s extending the existing tax relief from 2017, the Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

“But there are also other things that he wants included, and we’re working with him to make that happen. The White House gave us their request yesterday, the things that they want included of the president’s priorities, and so we’re working – the Ways and Means Committee in the House of Representatives and the Finance Committee in the Senate and our leadership teams – all working together to try and get to a product that is one that will be that big, beautiful bill and will deliver all of those things for the American people.”
