Washington, D.C. —
Senator John Thune today called on all Senators to stand up for energy consumers and manufacturers across the country by voting in favor of Sen. Lisa Murkowski's (R-AK) privileged bipartisan resolution that would prohibit EPA's overreaching regulation of greenhouse gas emissions.
"I am proud to be one of 40 Senators who have co-sponsored this common sense measure, and I am hopeful that a number of my Democrat colleagues will join me in voting for the Murkowski resolution," said Thune. "This vote is very clear: either Senators stand with the EPA and support new energy taxes or they will vote in support of the Murkowski resolution, which will protect the pocketbooks of families and small businesses."
Numerous South Dakota stakeholders have joined Thune's support of the Murkowski resolution, including: the Department of Energy and Natural Resources, the Agri-Business Association, the Farm Bureau, the Cattlemen's Association, the Grain & Feed Association, Wheat Inc., the Corn Growers Association, the Association of Cooperatives, the Rural Electric Association, the Association of Conservation Districts, the Pork Producers Council, and the Soybean Association.
"These groups know far better than bureaucrats in Washington that EPA regulations are the wrong way to make energy policy and are the last thing our economy needs right now," said Thune. "I hope the Senate will listen to the concerned voices across South Dakota and stop yet another overreach by President Obama that will adversely impact families, small businesses, and farmers and ranchers throughout our state."
A vote in the Senate on the disapproval resolution is scheduled to take place around 4:00 P.M. (EST) today. The privileged measure needs a simple majority of 51 votes for passage.
