Washington, D.C. —  Senator John Thune today joined with the Department of Interior in announcing the Indian and Tribal Entrepreneurship Incubator South Dakota Demonstration Project. The demonstration project aims to improve financial literacy and improve access to credit on reservations, increase business and finance education in tribal secondary schools and colleges, and strengthen the rules protecting the creditor borrower relationship.

"I believe that growth in private business and industry is the most effective way to raise the standard of living for everyone," said Thune. "The Indian and Tribal Entrepreneurship Incubator South Dakota Demonstration Project will give tribal businesses the education, resources, and legal safeguards necessary to create jobs and spur economic growth in Indian Country."

The project also places emphasis on identifying and developing energy and mineral resources on South Dakota's reservations, particularly wind energy.

"Native Americans have long valued environmental stewardship, and wind energy fits that philosophy. As a strong supporter of renewable fuels, I look forward to working with tribal leaders and the Department of Interior to promote this technology on South Dakota's reservations."
