Washington, D.C. —
Sen. John Thune (R-SD) today issued the following statement applauding the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote to confirm Judge John Roberts’ nomination as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He urged his colleagues to follow suit:
“The majority of Judiciary Committee Members—who studied Judge Roberts’ career and ability with high levels of scrutiny and hours of questioning—have determined he is an able and fitting choice for Chief Justice,” Thune said. “Their vote today should set a resounding example for the rest of the Senate body.
“As we prepare to vote on Judge Robert’s confirmation next week, I urge my colleagues in the Senate to put politics aside. Past justices have been confirmed nearly unanimously—anything less for a qualified and talented nominee like Judge Roberts would reveal a sad state of partisanship in the Supreme Court nomination process.
“Let’s give Judge Roberts an up-or-down vote—not left-or-right.”
