Senator John Thune announced today that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded $2 million to Lawrence County. The funds will be used to pave the extension of the primary runway at Spearfish's Clyde Ice Field following the $5 million in federal funding that was awarded last year.
"The extension of the primary runway at Clyde Ice Field is important to improving safety and enhancing the airport's capability to serve the entire Black Hills region," said Thune. "I am pleased at the progress of this project."
Completion of the paving work (phase III) is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
Aviation Improvement Program funding comes from a variety of user fees and fuel taxes that are deposited into the Aviation Trust Fund. Each year, these funds are distributed to airports, ranging from the large commercial airports to smaller general aviation airports, to assist with construction or other eligible improvements.
Senator Thune serves on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, which has primary jurisdiction over our nation's aviation system - including the funding allocated to airports across the country via the Aviation Trust Fund.
The FAA is a division within the U.S. Department of Transportation.
