Washington, D.C. —
Senator John Thune today issued the statement below following the Senate Appropriations Committee passage of the FY 2009 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill, which included several requests Senator Thune had made on behalf of various South Dakota initiatives:
"South Dakota's reservations face significant challenges that are rooted in the high violent crime rate and insufficient prosecution. I am pleased the Appropriations Committee has approved my requests aimed at improving law enforcement on reservations. I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure that these requests remain fully funded in the final bill."
Of Senator Thune's funding requests for South Dakota programs in the FY2009 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations bill, the following were approved in last week's Full Committee markup:
$250,000 to improve law enforcement and justice operations for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.
$850,000 to improve law enforcement and justice operations for the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.
$750,000 to improve law enforcement and justice operations for the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
$250,000 for the 911 emergency phone system for the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
The bill now awaits action by the full Senate.
