Washington, D.C. —
Senator John Thune today issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling striking down the ban on handgun ownership in the District of Columbia:
"The Supreme Court today ruled decisively in favor of Second Amendment rights. The Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms, and the Court made the correct decision in guaranteeing those rights to all Americans, including those in the District of Columbia.
"The Second Amendment gives law-abiding citizens the ability to defend themselves and their families. South Dakotans have long practiced responsible firearm ownership for self-defense and recreation, and I believe that all Americans should have the opportunity to do the same."
Senator Thune joined a bipartisan group of colleagues in filing an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in favor of overturning the ban on handguns in the District of Columbia.
