Washington, D.C. —
Yesterday, Senator Thune exercised his oversight duties as the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support by examining business transformation and financial management at the Department of Defense.
During the hearing, Senator Thune recognized the contribution of Ellsworth Air Force Base towards financial reform within the Air Force.
"The opening of the Air Force Financial Services Center will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Air Force financial services, and customer service," Thune stated during the hearing.
One of the witnesses at the hearing, John H. Gibson, Air Force Assistant Secretary for Financial Management, cited the Ellsworth Air Force Financial Services Center (AFFSC) as an example of a significant operational success.
"All told, the AFFSC returned 598 manpower slots to the warfighter, valued at $210 million, and more importantly, improved the customer service levels received by our Airmen," Gibson stated in his prepared testimony.
"I look forward to helping build on the record of strong, bipartisan oversight that this subcommittee created during the last five years over financial management reform efforts at the Department of Defense," Thune said in his opening statement. "Ensuring the taxpayer's dollars are well spent is all our responsibility. In a time of war it is even more so. Every dollar wasted is one less dollar for armored vehicles, one less dollar for body armor, one less dollar for ammunition, or one less dollar for medical supplies. Let us not forget that."
"Aside from business and financial management, Senator Thune's Subcommittee has jurisdiction over matters such as training, logistics, and maintenance, as well as military construction and base realignment and closure (BRAC)."
Also testifying at the hearing were Comptroller General David M. Walker, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Business Transformation Paul A. Brinkley, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Financial Management Peter E. Kunkel, and Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Financial Management Douglas A. Brook.
