To strengthen America's food supply and South Dakota's beef industry, Sen. John Thune today cosponsored legislation to modify the Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) legislation.
The legislation, sponsored by Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT), will move up the mandatory COOL implementation date by one year to September 2005.
"The voluntary program we have in place is not being using and is failing producers and consumers," said Thune (R-SD). "We need to put mandatory COOL in place to strengthen South Dakota's economy and America's food supply. South Dakota farmers and ranchers work hard to deliver the highest quality beef in the world. This legislation will help consumers purchase beef 'made in the USA'."
