Flag Requests

The U.S. Capitol Flag Program began in 1937 when a member of Congress requested a flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol building. The request for flags quickly grew, and the program was then put under the stewardship of the Architect of the Capitol. Today, constituents are able to request an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to commemorate special occasions or to honor individuals and organizations. I am honored to assist South Dakotans who would like to request a flag to be flown over the U.S. Capitol.

If you would like to request a flag, please place your order at least 14 days in advance of your desired fly date and allow 4-6 weeks for shipping after your flag is flown. If your desired fly date is less than 14 days away, please contact my Washington, D.C. office.

When selecting a flag type, you have the ability to choose from either a cotton or nylon flag, with a variety of sizes available to suit your needs. Please note, you must also select one of the following flag-flying options:

  1. Pre-flown Flag: This flag has already been flown over the U.S. Capitol, and you are NOT able to request a fly date.
  2. Standard Flag: You may request this flag to be flown on a specific date of your choice to commemorate the occasion.
