June 3, 2008 Marks 60 Years Since First Blast

April 2, 2008

Washington, D.C. —  Senator John Thune today introduced a resolution (S. Res. 496) honoring the 60th anniversary of the commencement of the sculpting of the Crazy Horse Memorial near Hill City, South Dakota.

"The Crazy Horse Memorial is one of South Dakota's most instantly recognizable landmarks," said Thune. "Crazy Horse is remembered by his people as a visionary leader who was committed to preserving the traditional Lakota way of life. The monument to Crazy Horse, which was started 60 years ago, is a tribute to his spirit and to the legacy of the Lakota people."

Senator Thune's resolution is cosponsored by Senator Johnson and pays tribute to the late sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and his family. Ziolkowski was the visionary artist behind the concept of the memorial. Today his family, under the leadership of his wife, Ruth, and the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation continue carving the memorial.
