Washington, D.C. —  The U.S. Department of Transportation has chosen Aberdeen for a $450,000 air transportation grant, Senator John Thune announced today. The grant will be used to increase the community’s air transportation capacity by replacing Northwest Airlink’s turboprop flights with larger regional jet aircraft.

“Improving flight service to Aberdeen will strengthen the economy and create new jobs,” Thune said. “This grant will allow local officials to upgrade airline service to Aberdeen. I am proud to work with the Aberdeen community and the Transportation Department to make this possible.”

The grant is part of this year’s round of Small Community Air Service Development Program (SCASDP) grants. According to the Transportation Department, this year was especially competitive, with more than 80 applications for 37 grants.

SCASDP is funded by a FY2005 Congressional appropriation of $20 million to encourage commercial air service in some of America’s smaller communities.
