Senator John Thune (R-SD) today joined Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) in offering an amendment to the energy package being considered this week in the U.S. Senate. The measure would provide incentives for the construction of new refineries on federal lands in order to increase domestic oil production and reduce gas prices for all Americans.
The Gas Petroleum Refiner Improvement & Community Empowerment Act (Gas PRICE ACT) would provide incentives to build refineries at Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) sites through the Economic Development Administration, thus expanding the nation's refining capacity while creating job opportunities in areas where a military facility has been closed or designated for closure.
"Gas prices are unacceptably high and a burden to families across the country who have come to dread trips to the gas station," Thune said. "This amendment represents an important step in reinvigorating America's refinery capacity, which has not seen a new refinery added to its ranks in roughly 30 years. It's no coincidence that Americans are paying record prices at the pump when no new refineries have been built in the U.S. in three decades."
