Washington, D.C. —

U.S. Senator John Thune (R-S.D.), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today issued the following statement regarding the passing of U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), Senate pro tempore:

“Today the Senate mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished members, Senator Daniel Inouye. Senator Inouye’s deep commitment to public service is a legacy that will live on in the Senate and to those who continue to wear our nation’s uniform. As a Medal of Honor recipient, Senator Inouye bravely served our country during World War II with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Following his service in the Army, Senator Inouye went on to become the second-longest serving senator in U.S. history. While Senator Inouye and I often found ourselves on different sides of the political spectrum, I was proud to serve alongside a true statesman and war hero. Kimberley and I are keeping Senator Inouye’s family and friends in our prayers.”
