Washington, DC —  Senator John Thune (R-SD) made the following comments today regarding President Bush's 2006 State of the Union Address that dealt with increasing ethanol use, production and research:

"Last night we heard President Bush devote a great deal of time in his State of the Union Address to increasing ethanol use, production and research. There are great demands from all corners of the government to include a sentence or two in the State of Union Address on numerous programs and initiatives, so the fact that President Bush devoted a whole section of his speech to renewables speaks volumes to the importance ethanol will play in America’s future energy needs.

"Ethanol is clearly the most promising alternative fuel to secure America's energy future. We in South Dakota have long known corn-based ethanol’s significant potential as a reliable, cost-efficient, environmentally friendly fuel. South Dakota’s corn growers and ethanol industry will greatly benefit from the president’s ambitious goal of replacing more than 75% of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025.

"I look forward to continuing to work with the Administration to increase ethanol research and use, which will greatly benefit South Dakota’s corn growers and ethanol industry."
