WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) today released the following statement ahead of the 21st anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks:

“That bright September morning 21 years ago will be forever seared into our national memory,” said Thune. “The terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93 tried to destroy our American way of life, but their cowardly actions were met by the patriotism, courage, and resolve of the American people. The United States will never forget the nearly 3,000 men and women who were tragically killed and the heroic first responders and service members who stepped up in service to our country. We mourn their loss, pray for their families, and remain grateful for the men and women who continue to stand watch against such evil.”
