As the end of the spring wheat harvest quickly approaches, combines continue to comb through the fields and the silos are starting to fill up. The harvest season in South Dakota is one of many reminders we have of the important role our agriculture producers play in our state's economy.
Despite some wet weather conditions, this has truly been a strong summer for South Dakota's agriculture producers.
When South Dakota industries succeed, we all succeed; whether it is a small family farm or a large producer, this type of success is good for our state.
The success of the agriculture industry does not happen by mere coincidence, however. Our top-notch ranchers and farmers are among the best in the nation. In addition, South Dakota benefits greatly from the work done at South Dakota State University and other colleges and universities when it comes to establishing more effective production practices or educating the next generation of farmers and ranchers.
This past week, I had the opportunity to attend some of the state's most anticipated agriculture events of the summer. After spending time at the Brown County Fair, the Turner County Fair, and Dakotafest, I was reminded of the dedication and commitment these folks possess to overcome the uncertainty that accompanies any agricultural industry.
Many attendees at these events expressed concern about the overreaching, burdensome regulations coming from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA's carbon regulations and the proposed dust regulation, among others will surely add to the uncertainty that family farms and small businesses face.
Our farmers and ranchers play an important role in making our state's economy a success. As a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee and someone who has worked to help craft the last two Farm bills in Congress, I will continue to work with producers and stakeholders across the state to ensure that policies and proposals that are kicked around our nation's capital take into consideration the needs of individuals and families across our state.
