Rail Service
A number of issues have disrupted rail service across our state, and South Dakota’s agricultural producers, many who are limited to a single rail carrier, have been hit particularly hard by rail service backlogs. Unmoved grain stocks from the 2014 harvest are resulting in lower grain prices and diminishing grain elevator storage capacity. We must ensure that the STB, which has direct oversight over railroad rate and service disputes and reviewing proposed railroad mergers, provides effective and efficient oversight of the rail industry.
I continue working closely with the STB to monitor and address rail service issues. I have co-sponsored legislation that improves the efficiency of the STB, enhances its ability to resolve service issues, and lowers administrative burdens on shippers. I have also worked directly with the railroads that service South Dakota to highlight concerns and seek solutions for South Dakota’s shippers.
I urge shippers impacted by rail service issues to notify the STB, which has reiterated to me the importance of hearing those concerns. I’m committed to working with our producers, shippers, and railroads to ensure that South Dakota’s rail service problems are addressed. I will regularly update this site, providing you with our latest actions and information regarding South Dakota rail service.
