Washington, D.C. —

Senator John Thune (R-S.D.), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, made a statement today following President Obama’s so-called new climate initiative that will impose a costly national energy tax on affordable sources of energy and crush American jobs:

“Once again, the president has pivoted away from jobs and the economy and is now doubling down on costly new EPA regulations that amount to nothing more than a national energy tax on Americans who are already struggling in the sluggish economy. Since the administration and its allies in Congress have failed to advance cap-and-trade legislation amidst the public’s concerns of higher electricity prices and less jobs, they will now expand their unilateral use of EPA regulations to implement this backdoor tax on affordable sources of energy. The president’s initiative would destroy more than 500,000 jobs, reduce annual household income by $1,400, and raise energy prices by 20 percent.

“Instead of charging ahead with heavy-handed regulations, the Obama administration should be working to promote domestic sources of energy and put more Americans back to work. The American people deserve pro-growth energy policies that help create jobs and higher take-home pay, not policies that dramatically increase energy prices.”
