Washington, D.C. —  Senator John Thune today issued the following statement in recognition of National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week:

"The gratitude our nation owes to those who have defended our freedom around the globe cannot be overstated. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our veterans, especially those who are receiving care for injuries from battle.

"I have been honored to visit with wounded service members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington as well as overseas. Their stories are just as humbling as the importance of their sacrifice.

"I believe that the service of our nation's veterans merits them the best possible care following their time spent in defense of America. I urge my colleagues in Congress to use National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to ensure that our veterans receive the care that they deserve."

On Wednesday, February 13th the Senate Armed Services Committee, of which Senator Thune is a member, will meet to hear about implementation and plans from the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs to better care for, manage, and transition wounded and ill service members.

"I am eager to hear from the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs on their plans to improve the overall care of wounded soldiers," said Thune. "Their sacrifice demands nothing less."

National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week runs from February 10th, 2008 to February 16th, 2008.
