Washington, DC —
Senator John Thune announced today that South Dakota will receive $500,000 from the Office of Grants and Training Preparedness Directorate in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as part of the 2006 Buffer Zone Protection Program (BZPP).
"It is important that we continue to be vigilant about addressing the security needs of this country," said Thune. "It is critical that states work with the federal government to assess security needs and concerns. Our nation's security must be at the forefront of our agenda and I will continue to work to make sure that happens."
The BZPP provides funds to states to support the implementation of Buffer Zone Plans outside the perimeter of identified critical infrastructure/key resource sites. The plans are intended to develop effective preventative and protective measures that make it more difficult for terrorists to conduct surveillance or launch attacks within the immediate vicinity of high priority critical infrastructure targets. They also increase the preparedness capabilities of the local jurisdictions responsible for the security and safety of the surrounding communities.
