Washington, D.C. —  Senator John Thune today announced that the U.S. Forest Service will extend the comment period for the Nebraska National Forest and Grasslands Draft Environmental Impact Statement for designation of a motorized travel access system for an additional 45 days. Senator Thune sent a letter to the agency earlier this week requesting an extension so South Dakota landholders and other interested parties would have more time to comment on the proposal.

"South Dakota's ranchers, landowners, and visitors deserve to have their views considered when the Forest Service makes decisions regarding motorized vehicle travel," said Thune. "This extension will give those interested and impacted by the decisions an additional opportunity to have their voices heard."

The Forest Service has extended the comment period until December 24, 2009. An announcement in the Federal Register is expected shortly.
