Washington, DC —  Senator John Thune introduced a bill yesterday to extend the authorization for establishing a memorial in Washington, DC to honor disabled veterans.

"This memorial would recognize the sacrifices that so many in this country have made to preserve our freedom," said Thune. "Washington is home to memorials and monuments honoring the people who have made this country great; this would be an appropriate and important addition."

The original authorization for this memorial was enacted on October 24, 2000 and expires this year. Thune's bill would extend the authorization to establish this memorial to October 24, 2015.

The memorial would be paid for by donations and funds raised by the Disabled Veterans' LIFE Memorial Foundation.

Senator Tim Johnson introduced this legislation last year and Senator Thune has been working with Senator Johnson's staff and the Disabled Veterans' LIFE Memorial Foundation on the legislation.
