Washington, D.C. —  Earlier this week, Senator John Thune was presented with the Golden Triangle Award, the highest legislative award given by the National Farmers Union. Senator Thune was recognized for his leadership on renewable energy, strengthening the farm safety net, and rural development issues.

"I am honored to receive this award, and I appreciate the opportunity to see the South Dakota Farmers Union members who traveled to Washington, D.C.," said Thune. "Agriculture is central to our state's economy, and Congress needs work with producers to ensure that family farms and ranches are kept strong. I appreciate the leadership of organizations like the National Farmers Union as Congress debates issues such as renewable energy development and the stability of the farm safety net."

The award is given annually to members of Congress who have demonstrated outstanding leadership on issues affecting family farmers, ranchers, and rural communities. Senator Thune serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee, which was responsible for crafting the 2008 Farm Bill, and is the ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Energy Subcommittee. Senator Thune has received the Golden Triangle in each of the last three years
