Washington, D.C. —
Senator John Thune issued the below statement after the United States Senate voted to override President Bush's veto of the 2008 Farm Bill (H.R. 6124) by a margin of 80 to 14. The House of Representatives voted earlier this afternoon 317-109 to override the veto of the bill. A clerical error last month resulted in only 14 of the 15 titles being enacted into law following Congress overriding the President's original veto. Because the Senate and the House of Representatives voted successfully to override the President's veto, the complete Farm Bill now becomes law.
"The entirety of the 2008 Farm Bill is finally enacted," said Thune. "This Farm Bill is a victory for South Dakota. It creates a permanent disaster program, helps usher in a new era of biofuels production, and improves the farm safety net. In the years ahead, I will be working with my colleagues on the Senate Agriculture Committee to see that the provisions of this bill are properly implemented."
Senator John Thune, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, was instrumental in shaping many titles of the bill, which outlines our nation's agriculture policy through 2012.
