Washington, DC —
Senator John Thune today announced that Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Avera St. Luke's Hospital and Rapid City Regional Hospital, Inc. in South Dakota have been awarded an incentive payment for being among the top-performing hospitals in providing high-quality care as part of a three-year national Medicare pilot demonstration.
Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Avera St. Luke's Hospital and Rapid City Regional Hospital, Inc. are among more than 260 hospitals participating in a national pay-for-performance demonstration project, which was launched in October 2003 by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Premier Inc. healthcare alliance. The CMS/Premier Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration (HQID) is designed to determine if economic incentives to hospitals are effective at improving the quality of inpatient care.
As part of the HQID project, these hospitals volunteered to have their data for five specific clinical conditions compared with the performance of other participating hospitals using nationally accepted, standard performance measures. CMS announced today that it is awarding four South Dakota hospitals an incentive payment for scoring in the top 20 percent for one or more of five clinical conditions, which include acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), coronary artery bypass graft, heart failure, pneumonia, and hip and knee replacement.
"It's wonderful news that four South Dakota hospitals will receive incentive payments as a result of their outstanding performance in a national Medicare pilot project," Thune said. "I want to congratulate Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Avera St. Luke's Hospital and Rapid City Regional Hospital, Inc. for this achievement, and I want to thank their staff for the quality service they are providing for South Dakotans across the state."
