Washington, D.C. —
“I applaud the Senate Leadership for agreeing to schedule debate on the highway bill next week. With threats of a Senate shut down looming, we need to act now to pass long overdue transportation legislation. I hope the Senate will work together to quickly pass a bill that updates our nation’s transportation infrastructure, promotes ethanol and protects South Dakota’s historical share of federal funding.” – Senator John Thune
Background: Friday morning the Senate leadership filed a cloture motion signed by Senator John Thune and other senators on the motion to proceed to debate on the Transportation bill. This means that the Senate will begin opening debate on the transportation bill Monday afternoon. As a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Senator Thune helped move this important legislation through the Committee in March, including $1.243 billion for South Dakota’s road needs over the next 5 years.
