Washington, D.C. —
Senator John Thune was named to a second term as the Ranking Member of the Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security Subcommittee of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee today.
“Transportation policies are important to agriculture states like South Dakota where we use railroads and the highway system to transport goods across many miles,” said Thune. “I look forward to continuing to work with Subcommittee Chairman Lautenberg to better address the surface transportation needs of our country.”
The Subcommittee has jurisdiction over matters relating to interstate transportation policy issues, oversight over the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Federal Railroad Administration, the Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, the Research and Innovative Technology Administration, the Maritime Administration and the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. The Subcommittee also has jurisdiction over the transportation security programs and policies of the Department of Homeland Security. The Subcommittee focuses on safety, security, and infrastructure development related to both freight and passenger transportation.
Senator Thune was also named to the Aviation Operations, Safety, and Security; Communications, Technology, and the Internet; Competitiveness, Innovation, and Export Promotion; and Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance Subcommittees.
