Thune on America’s Newsroom: Voters Reject Democrats’ Big Government Policies

“The clear message coming out of the elections on Tuesday night was that there was a rejection, a repudiation of this nanny state, big government approach the Democrats here in Washington are taking.”

November 4, 2021

U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) today joined “America’s Newsroom” to discuss the Democrats’ reckless tax-and-spending spree and the Biden administration’s reported plan to give illegal immigrants $450,000 taxpayer-funded settlements.

On Democrats ignoring voters who reject their radical policies:

“I think they're in a bubble right now. They’re obviously not looking at, you know, what’s happening around the country and listening to the voices of the people out there. The clear message coming out of the elections on Tuesday night was that there was a rejection, a repudiation of this nanny state, big government approach the Democrats here in Washington are taking. And I don’t know how you can conclude any other way.

“I mean, obviously, in Virginia we saw a historic victory, and in New Jersey, a very close race. But in both cases, I think it was a response to the Biden agenda and the American people saying, ‘I don't want this, this isn't what I voted for.’ And so I think they're completely misinterpreting that message.”

On the Democrats’ reckless tax-and-spending spree:

“But in the end, this bill is gonna be written by Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema in the Senate. And we’re hoping that we can do everything to try and restrain the amount of reckless spending and reckless taxing and reckless amount of debt that is going to come with this if something eventually passes.”

...

“If you look at what they’re contemplating doing here, there's gonna be a lot of duplication, a lot of overlap, a lot of spending that’s totally unnecessary. And you look at the things that are funded in here, and you know, their argument is the reason people voted the way they did on Tuesday night is because they don't know what's in this bill, they don't know how good it is for them. I would argue they do know what's in it.

“You know, funding hundreds of millions of dollars for urban agriculture, tree equity, you know, tax credits for universities and colleges that offer courses in environmental justice. This stuff is just, it's crazy left. And the country understands that, and that's why they're responding the way that they are."

On the Biden administration’s reported plan to give illegal immigrants $450,000 taxpayer-funded cash settlements:

“It’s an insult to hard-working Americans, taxpayers, that they’re talking about paying up to $450,000 per person, so not per family. So yeah, Republicans are going to be actively trying to block that. There’s a bill over here in the Senate that I would suspect virtually, if not every, Republican will be on.”
