A New Day in America

By Sen. John Thune

November 15, 2024

It’s a new day in America. On November 5, the American people spoke with a clear voice and returned President Trump to the White House and sent Republican majorities to the House and Senate, giving Republicans a clear mandate to restore America and finally turn the page on the failures of the Biden-Harris years.

It’s difficult to overstate what President Trump accomplished in this election. He assembled a broad coalition of Americans from the heartland to the coasts who wanted change, and we will deliver change.

That work begins now, and it starts with securing our southern border and deporting illegal immigrants. We also have to get our economy moving again. Republicans will do everything we can to grow economic opportunity, starting with preserving tax relief for the American people, supporting farmers and ranchers, and taking a hatchet to the bureaucratic machine in Washington. And we will restore American strength to promote peace at home and abroad, including restoring American energy dominance.

I’m honored that my colleagues have entrusted me to serve as majority leader as we work to advance Senate Republicans’ bold agenda. We have a lot of work to do, and I’m looking forward to working with all of my colleagues and President Trump to execute on our mandate. I’m grateful for the trust and support I’ve received from South Dakotans over the years. Representing our state is the honor of my life, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to elevate South Dakota’s voice and priorities on the national stage. And I know that South Dakota values will serve me well as I undertake these new responsibilities.

One of the things that drew me into politics was Ronald Reagan. Reagan’s philosophy of limited government and peace through strength resonated with me, but I was also drawn to his sense of humor, his optimism, and his belief in America. I suspect a lot of people who supported President Trump in this election were likewise attracted to President Trump’s optimism and faith in our country.

It’s been a tough four years for the American people, but America’s best days are ahead of us. Together with President Trump, Republicans will build a strong and prosperous America. Now, let’s get to work.
