In the past few years, many families in South Dakota and throughout the country have dealt with smaller budgets and thinner wallets due to the downturn in our nation's economy. Tangible hardships are perhaps more prevalent for our friends, families, and neighbors this year as our economy continues to lag.

Yet, despite the serious economic challenges we face as a nation, we still have our freedom and for that we are truly blessed.

Throughout America's short history, countless men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf so that we may enjoy freedom and life free from tyranny. These brave souls understood the price of freedom and were willing to give of themselves to secure freedom for future generations.

Many South Dakotans continue to give of themselves in the name of liberty with the understanding that our freedom is indeed, not free, nor guaranteed. Our present day soldiers work to ensure that our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness will never be in jeopardy.

This year, as we sit down at the Thanksgiving table let us all reflect on the exceptional service of the men and women around the globe who protect our freedom, especially those who are currently serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere around the world. On a day when they should be with their own families, they are fighting to keep all of us safe. The brave members of our military protect our ability to sit at the table and share in the bounty of Thanksgiving.

On this Thanksgiving Day, Kimberley and I extend our sincere thanks to all of South Dakota's soldiers and their families.
