U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and John Thune (R-S.D.) introduced legislation to prevent ammunition and fishing tackle from unnecessary EPA regulation. The Hunting, Fishing, and Recreational Shooting Protection Act excludes ammunition and fishing tackle from the Toxic Substances Control Act, leaving regulation up to state fish and game agencies and the fish and wildlife service, who currently regulate ammo and tackle.
"Hunting and fishing is a critical part of Minnesota’s economy and heritage, and we need to make sure we’re doing everything we can to support outdoor recreation,” Klobuchar said. “This commonsense legislation will protect ammunition and fishing tackle from unnecessary regulation and ensure that Minnesota sportsmen can continue to enjoy these activities.”
“Hunting and fishing are integral to our identity as South Dakotans and a source of pride for many of us,” said Thune. “The extreme and unnecessary EPA regulations on certain ammunition and fishing tackle would increase the cost of hunting and fishing and price sportsmen out of the market. I am committed to ensuring that future generations of South Dakotans are not unnecessarily restricted from hunting, fishing, and enjoying the great outdoors.”
The legislation is supported by The National Rifle Association, Safari Club, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Wildlife Forever, and other hunting and fishing groups.
