Washington, D.C. —  Senator John Thune today announced he would not support the nomination of Cass Sunstein to be head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs within the White House Office of Management and Budget.

"Mr. Sunstein's past statements about banning hunting and allowing animals to bring lawsuits make it impossible for me to support his nomination. I am concerned that the Administration continues to nominate individuals who advocate policies that could be especially harmful to rural states."

Mr. Sunstein has made statements in favor of banning hunting, increased gun control, and drastically changing the livestock industry. He has even suggested that individuals could file lawsuits on behalf of animals against their owners.

The Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs reviews and approves all regulations proposed by federal departments.

Senator Thune serves as a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee and has introduced legislation along with Senator Schumer (D-NY) that would prohibit a tax on agriculture producers for naturally occurring emissions from livestock.
