Washington, D.C. —  Senator John Thune this week discussed a forthcoming report on oil reserves with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). In coming weeks, the USGS is planning to release a report on the recoverable oil reserves in the Bakken Formation of the Williston Basin.

"I look forward to seeing the report that USGS has been working on as we continue to search for new sources of energy. A full understanding of our domestic oil reserves is critical as we address our energy challenges," Thune said.

In addition to releasing a study on the Bakken Formation in coming weeks, this fall the USGS is also planning to release a much larger study of the Williston Basin, a geological formation that includes South Dakota.

The geological "plays" (or potential oil or gas accumulations) of the Williston Basin, which extend into South Dakota, include the Madison play, the Red River play, the Middle and Upper Devonian play, and the Southern Williston Basin Margin-Niobrara Shallow Biogenic play.

With $100 oil, the economics of oil recovery have changed over the past five to ten years. Updated USGS reports are an important resource for all stakeholders.
