Washington, D.C. —
United States Senator John Thune (R-SD) today was elected by his fellow Republican Senators to the position of Vice Chairman of the Republican Conference, the fifth-highest Republican leadership position in the United States Senate.
"I'm grateful for the support I received today from my colleagues. I appreciate the trust and confidence they have placed in me to serve my state, my country and my party as a member of the Senate Republican leadership team," said Thune. "This position will allow me to bring issues important to South Dakota and rural America to the Leadership table as we work to address the critical issues facing our country."
As Vice Chairman of the Republican Conference, Senator Thune will be responsible for helping to craft party message, policy and strategy.
"Since his election to the Senate four years ago, Senator Thune has been a strong advocate and spokesman for his state and our party. I welcome him to the leadership table and look forward to working closely with Senator Thune as we shape and communicate our agenda on behalf of the American people," said Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.
Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina and Senator Susan Collins of Maine gave nomination speeches on behalf of Senator Thune.
Senator Thune has served for the past two years as the Chief Deputy Whip. In this role, Thune helped Republican Leadership gain support from Senate colleagues on major legislative issues.
