Senator John Thune (R-SD) today offered an amendment to the Democrat Fiscal Year 2008 Budget Resolution, which would require 60 votes in the Senate in order to pass any legislation that raises taxes on family farmers, family ranchers, or small businesses.
"Just because Democrats have a majority in the Senate doesn't mean a majority of Senators will go along with their broken budget and record tax hikes on hard-working Americans," Thune said. "My amendment would require that in order for any tax increases on small businesses or farmers to pass in the Senate, at least 60 senators would have to vote in favor of the increase.
"At a time when the farm economy in South Dakota has been negatively impacted by six successive years of drought, the last thing our farmers, ranchers and small businesses need is a tax increase.
"I hope the final Senate budget is one I can support. However, I have reservations about the current Democrat budget because it could slow recent economic growth and increase taxes in the future."
