Washington, DC —  Senator John Thune (R-SD) today issued the following statement regarding the swearing-in of the 110th Congress:

"With the start of a new year and a new Congress, I'm excited about the opportunities that lie ahead to make a positive difference for South Dakotans and the country. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to put forth common sense policies that make America safer, stronger and more prosperous, while reining in spending and being disciplined stewards of taxpayer money.

"I look forward to using my new seat on the Senate Agriculture Committee to elevate and advance the priorities of South Dakota's agriculture industry as the new farm bill is written. It is my priority that our farmers and ranchers continue to grow and prosper for both the security of their families as well as our state's economy. With my new assignment to the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, and existing seats on the Armed Services and Small Business Committees, I will be closely involved with efforts to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil and strengthen home-grown renewable energy research, boost America's security and national defense, as well as work on important transportation initiatives and policies to strengthen South Dakota's economy for years to come.

"As I have done since my days in the House of Representatives, I will continue to focus on fundamental priorities to strengthen the family, lower taxes, increase access to quality health care, defend and protect the Second Amendment, and place qualified judges who interpret and apply the law fairly in courts across the country."
