Washington, DC —  Senator John Thune (R-SD) today issued the following statement as Japan resumes importation of U.S. beef:

"I am glad to see Japan has opened its market to U.S. beef from cattle 20 months old and younger. This is good news for the people of South Dakota. While overdue, Japan's decision to open their market to U.S. beef was the honorable and right thing to do.

"Our cattle and ranching industries in South Dakota and across the country adhere to a standard of excellence that is respected by nations worldwide. I hope trade with Japan will continue steadily, without any further disruptions, for the benefit of both countries and the continued success of our ranchers here in the U.S."
