Senator John Thune (R-SD) today issued the following statement commemorating the National Day of Prayer:
"The National Day of Prayer was created by Harry Truman in 1952 during another challenging era for our nation. In 1952, American soldiers were fighting North Korean and Communist Chinese attempts to conquer South Korea. Just as we prayed for our troops' safe return then, we must pray once again for the safety of our men and women in uniform serving in the War on Terror today. These are young people who have chosen service over self. We are grateful for their willingness to put our safety, our security and our well-being first," Thune said.
"But prayer is not only for matters of war and peace. Prayer is something that many of us rely on in our day-to-day lives. Prayer is a daily part of my life and the life of my family, and I rely greatly on prayer for discernment and direction as I serve the people of South Dakota.
"I hope we can all pause on this National Day of Prayer to thank God for our many blessings, our loved ones, our freedoms, and the men and women who serve to defend all that we hold dear. May God continue to protect our troops and bless the people of South Dakota."
