Washington, DC —  The U.S. Senate today approved legislation authored by Senators Tim Johnson and John Thune that would provide compensation to members of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe who have suffered land loss or damages as a result of the Pick Sloan projects on the Missouri River.

S. 1535, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Equitable Compensation Amendments Act of 2005, was introduced by Senator Johnson with Senator Thune as an original co-sponsor and would accelerate compensation to members of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe for damage resulting from the Oahe Dam and Reservoir Project.

"I'm pleased the Senate has approved this legislation to give fair and overdue compensation to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe for land that was either lost or damaged during the construction of dams on the Missouri River," Senator Thune said. "I'm hopeful the House of Representatives will act quickly to pass this legislation so we can finally ensure this compensation for members of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, which will serve as an important investment for future economic development on these reservations."
