Thune to visit Ellsworth Air Force Base

Senator continues push for Ellsworth

May 2, 2005

Washington, D.C. —  Senator John Thune will visit Ellsworth Air Force Base and meet with base officials on a trip to Rapid City this Wednesday, May 4.

The Senator will also brief reporters at a press conference at the South Dakota Air and Space Museum and discuss the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) with the Ellsworth Task Force.

“Visiting with base officials before the Pentagon’s decision will help me continue to advocate Ellsworth’s military value to our nation and state,” Thune said. “Visiting the base will help highlight the importance of Ellsworth in the final weeks before the Pentagon’s decision.”

Thune has advocated Ellsworth’s strengths since his election in November, meeting with senior Administration and Pentagon officials including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Last week, Thune met with incoming Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England and again raised the military value of Ellsworth. During his six years in the House of Representatives, Thune also helped fund several projects at Ellsworth, including housing facilities, a fire station, and a live ordinance loading area.
