Washington, D.C. —
Senator John Thune today was selected as a deputy whip for the 109th Congress. As deputy whip, Senator Thune (R-SD) will support Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in his role as Majority Whip, primarily by building support for Republican legislative priorities and assisting with floor operations.
"John will be an excellent addition to the Whip Team, and I look forward to working with him during the 109th Congress," said Majority Whip McConnell. “He will play an important role in working with his colleagues from both sides of the aisle to pass an agenda that will benefit all Americans.”
As a deputy whip, Thune will attend weekly deputy whip meetings to discuss the legislative agenda. Earlier this week legislative leaders said strengthening Social Security topped the Republicans’ legislative agenda.
“As a deputy whip, I will be proud to help lead the fight for our pro-growth agenda and make sure South Dakota’s voice is heard,” Thune said. “This is the team that will make sure we strengthen Social Security, pass a fiscally responsible budget, and move legislation that increases the use of renewable fuels. I look forward to fighting for South Dakota’s priorities as a deputy whip.”
