To promote safe and affordable prescription drugs, Senator John Thune joined three other freshman senators Wednesday to announce details of a new bipartisan, bicameral drug reimportation bill that was introduced in the U.S. Senate and House.
The new legislation will give Americans immediate relief from the outrageously high cost of prescription drugs. If passed into law, the bill will legalize individual consumers importation of certain prescription drugs for their personal use.
“Allowing reimportation will give consumers access to safe and affordable prescription drugs,” said Thune (R-SD). “It’s telling that so many new senators are joining together to promote drug reimportation. We’ve talked to the voters and know reducing prescription drug costs is a top priority. This bill will make prescription drugs more affordable to all Americans.”
The legislation, S. 109, will allow the importation of prescription drugs only if the drugs and the facilities where they are manufactured are federally approved, and will require that imported prescription drugs be packaged and shipped using counterfeit-resistant technologies to ensure their safety.
The legislation is sponsored by Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) and House Sponsor Rep. Gil Gutknecht (R-MN). Joining Senator Thune in co-sponsoring the legislation are Sens. Ken Salazar (D-CO) and Jim DeMint (R-SC).
